Message from Janet Duprey: As a co-sponsor of Assembly bill 6305-A, I stood proudly with Governor Andrew Cuomo as he signed the bill into law. This new law which becomes effective November 1, 2012 provides health insurance coverage for those in need of diagnosis and those who have been diagnosed as being on the Autism Spectrum. Autistic children and adults will now have increased access to the programs and services they need and deserve.
This legislation is a major step forward in providing access to health care including a variety of treatment options to improve the life of children and adults with autism spectrum disorders and their families. This bill allows families to seek earlier treatment and better results while easing the financial burden they currently face. I applaud Governor Cuomo for signing this bill passed unanimously by the members of the Legislature. This new law is simply the right thing to do for thousands of New Yorkers on the autism spectrum and their families.

A letter from Town Supervisor Peter Glushko
The Town of Peru’s Preliminary Budget for 2012 is ready for public scrutiny and the Town’s tax levy is well below the 2% cap. Tax levies for Town General, Town Highway remained the same as the 2011 levy. The Town Sewer tax levy increased by 2% due to increased NYS Retirement and employee health insurance costs, but did meet the tax cap requirement of no more than 2%. The Valcour Sewer District tax levy decreased from last year due to the retirement of a bond that was secured to pay for much needed repair /upgrade work in that district. The Peru Water District tax levy decreased due to an upcoming bond retirement which will occur after next year begins. The 2012 Budget includes a 1.5% cost of living raise for Town employees, both elected and appointed. (Click here to review budget)
The 2012 Town Budget tax levy is a direct result of the hard work of the Town Board, Brandy McDonald, Kregg Bruno, Sue Polhemus and Jim Douglass and all of the department heads and staff of the Town. I would like to thank them for the time and energy they all spent in producing a budget that still provides the high level of services that Town residents have come to expect. Throughout the process, they made sound economic decisions that allowed us to absorb increased mandated costs with little effect upon the taxpayer. I also would like to express my appreciation for the hard work of all Town employees throughout this past year, a year that sometimes strained our ability to accomplish what was needed on behalf of the Town’s residents. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.
Peter Glushko, Town Supervisor
A Public Hearing on the Preliminary Budget will be held at the Peru Town Hall on November 10, 2011 at 6 p.m.

PLATTSBURGH — The Taste of Home Cooking School is back by popular demand.
Denton Publications and other fine sponsors will bring the Taste of Home Cooking School back to the Crete Memorial Civic Center this Saturday, Nov. 5, once again giving people an opportunity to learn helpful tips and techniques through informative cooking demonstrations.
Ed Coats, associate publisher of Denton Publications and New Market Press, has been organizing Taste of Home locally since first offering it in Burlington, Vt., six years ago. Last year exceeded Coats’ expectations, with more than 1,100 in attendance. “Last year was great,” said Coats. “The show was completely sold out. Unfortunately, we had to turn people away at the door because we had no more space or goodie bags.” Coats anticipates a similar level of interest in this year’s event.
The event will center around demonstrations from Taste of Home culinary specialist Eric Villegas, Read more »

Conversation to focus on jobs and the economy, but open to all issues
WASHINGTON – In an ongoing effort to conduct an open discussion about the issues that affect New York, Congressman Bill Owens will hold a telephone town hall Thursday, November 3rd. Owens will update callers about ongoing efforts to create jobs in New York and take questions from callers from 7:10 p.m. to 8:10 p.m.
“There are still many unanswered questions for those looking for jobs in New York, and I am pleased to have the opportunity to provide a forum for constituents to voice their concerns and discuss what is important to them,” said Owens. “This is another great opportunity for New Yorkers to ask me questions, share what is on their mind, or just listen to the conversation.”
A random sample of 40,000 residents in New York’s 23rd Congressional District will be chosen to participate in the conference call Thursday evening. To request a phone call invitation, a constituent from NY-23 can email their name and number to ny23townhall@mail.house.gov or call the Congressman’s Washington office at 202-225-4611. Read more »

Most Peru residents would probably agree that the hundreds of Jamaican men who come to our community from August through October are part of the fabric of our community. They harvest our apples and spend thousands of dollars in our local stores. We see them at the Grand Union, in Stewart’s or the Dollar store each evening or on a rainy day. Nevertheless, they’re an enigma for most of us. We see them. We may say hello to them; but, few of us know them.
Forrence Orchards employed 187 Jamaican men this harvest season. While a few will remain until late December, most departed over the past two or three days. Yesterday, November 1st, the Peru Gazette spoke to a few of the men who live in Forrence’s Mannix Road housing. They were waiting for a bus to pick them at about 4 p.m.
They all said it had been a good harvest season and they enjoyed coming to Peru. Most are family men with a wife and several children at home. They come from several Jamaican parishes and they will rarely see each other after returning home. Rudolph Darlington said he’s been coming to Peru for the last 23 years. He has three children and earns his living growing Irish potatoes on his 5 or 6 acre farm. Delroy Hanlon has six children and grows Blue Mountain coffee on his small farm. Rudolph Peddie grows ginger, yams and pimento on his small farm. He spoke proudly of his ancestors who came from Africa as slaves only to escape to the mountains and fight for Jamaica’s independence. Another man said he is a chicken farmer while a younger man is proud of being a mason. It is always a pleasure speaking with these hard working, friendly and courteous men.
