Town of Peru taxpayers will have the opportunity to voice their opinion of the town’s preliminary 2012 budget at a Public Hearing scheduled for Thursday, November 10th at 6 p.m. The Peru Gazette sat down with Town Supervisor Peter Glushko earlier this week and discussed some of the budget details.
In his budget introduction Glushko stated the 2012 tax levy will be well below the 2% cap. The general and highway levies remained the same while the sewer tax levy will increase by 2% because of increased retirement and health insurance costs. The general tax rate will be reduced from $1.92 to $1.91/m. The highway department tax rate will decrease from $2.36 to $2.35/m. The board has budgeted $3,857,331 to operate the town, $2,051,263 of which is raised by taxes. Other significant sources of revenue include water and sewer fees, court fines, mortgage taxes, grants, zoning permits and cable television franchise fees.
Elected and non-elected staff members will receive a 1.5% raise. Commenting on the raise Glushko said, “The 1.5% isn’t quite the 2% that the cost of living increased. It’s a balance to meet the wants and needs of both taxpayers and employees.” Read more »

Voting in the Town of Peru will take place on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 between the hours of 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. Voting takes place at the St. Augustine’s Parish Center, 3035 Main St., in Peru. All registered voters are encouraged to make their voices heard. Voters will choose between incumbent Democrat Brandy McDonald, incumbent Democrat Kregg Bruno and challenger Republican Geoffrey Spear for two open town council positions. Two years ago Adele Douglas wrote an article telling our readers about her walk through Ausable Marsh. Today my wife Jean and I discovered how well Adele described her experience. While most people view the marsh from Ausable Point State Park, this trail brings you through the western side of the marsh, closer to route 9 and the Ausable River. If you walk far enough you will come to the river. The views are beautiful now. They must be equally memorable in spring and summer. As Adele pointed out, Ausable Marsh is located just south of the Bear Swamp Road – Route 9 intersection. When driving east on Bear Swamp Road (Rt. 442), turn right at the Route 9 intersection. Immediately look to your left and you should see the well-worn NYS Conservation Department sign on your left. Follow the narrow dirt road under the railroad tracks to a parking area located about 1/2 mile from Route 9. (Click here to view our photos) (Click here for Adele Douglas’ story)

November 5, 2011 has been a beautiful day in Peru. My wife Jean and I decided to take a walk in our own town. We drove the short distant to Ausable Point State Park. It was a cool 45 degrees, but several people were walking, running, bicycling and enjoying the park’s beauty. Here are a few photos.
