Family Court Judge Timothy Lawliss won the support of his hometown in today’s elections winning Peru by 613 votes over his opponent William Meconi. (1662 to 1049). Republican Candidate Michael Farrell defeated Democrat James Reed in the Highway Superintendent race by 203 votes (1283 to 1080). Voter turnout was extremely high ranging from 66% to 76% in the five districts. Assemblywoman Janet Duprey said the normal voter turnout in a Presidential election year is about 54%.

Bill Downs is well known in Peru for his work with the town and his leadership of the Fire Department. However, this is the fourth year Bill and several of his family and friends entertained both children and adults with their scary creatures and scenes at Bill’s home at the corner of Main St. and the Bear Swamp Road. The Peru Town Board will hold a public hearing on its 2009 preliminary town budget on Thursday, November 6th at 7 p.m. Copies of the budget are available in the Town Hall. The Peru Gazette will publish budget details within the next several hours.

The Peru Town Board has called an Emergency Meeting for Thursday, October 29, 2008 at 6 p.m. for the purpose of setting a date for the public hearing on the 2009 town budget. The meeting notice in today’s “Press Republican” incorrectly stated that the publc hearing would be held this evening. The town is required to give a five day notice prior to this public hearing.

The Peru Town Board assumed more responsibility for town operations and reduced the responsibilities of the Town Supervisor at its October 27th meeting. The counselors voted 3-1 with one abstention to abolish the position of confidential secretary to the Town Supervisor and to establish the position of confidential secretary to the Town Board with Counselor Peter Glushko supervising the new position. This is the first of a series of Peru Gazette business profiles.

Over the next several months we hope to profile every business in Peru. Local businesses provide the goods and services that are an important part of our daily lives. It should be interesting learning about the people who own and operate these businesses and the products and services they provide.

Craig and Heather Recore opened Hardcore Fitness and Tanning on March 10th in the former Knights of Columbus building at 3452 Route 22. The Recores both take great pride in their totally remodeled and upgraded facility. Craig explained, “It’s an incredible facility for a small town. People appreciate it when they see it.” Heather added, “We wanted a place where everybody could go. It has an ‘at-home’ kind of feeling. There’s something for everyone.”

Craig and Heather Recore operated a franchised tool business for the past ten years, but Craig said that he had been thinking about opening a fitness center for a long time. He stated, “For the past several years I’ve been serious about competition bodybuilding. I thought there was a need for this in this area, especially after Bob Durgan closed his doors.” Craig Recore knows Peru well. He’s a 1990 graduate of Peru Central. Heather graduated from Beekmantown Central.

Altogether the fitness center includes about seventy-five pieces of Nautilus and aerobic equipment along with an aerobics room, locker rooms and tanning rooms. Extras include food supplements, a juice bar and free shower towels. The cardio room has treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, a step mill and two flat screen televisions. The main room features free-weights, selectorized and cable systems – enough equipment to please almost any customer. Aerobics classes are free to all members and personal trainers are available by appointment. Recore emphasized his background saying, “We have a lot of knowledge and experience. We help with bodybuilding and training.”

Hardcore Fitness & Tanning offers a variety of pricing options for singles, couples, families and seniors and special pricing for corporate/employee groups of twenty or more. $5.00 Day Passes are also available. The facility is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. This letter was received from Brenda Higgins Cimo whose sister Theresa and her husband Robert (Rob) lost their 64 Elm Street home in an early morning fire. The Higgins girls grew up on the Jabez Allen Road in Peru. Read more »
