Editorial: COVID deaths are people, not just numbers | Opinion | pressrepublican.com

Editor Joe LoTemplio:

“We have now hit and exceeded the centenary mark for deaths due to COVID-19 in the North Country. Believe me, it is not a milestone. When my mother passed away from COVID-19 this past January in Rochester, I remember looking at paperwork the hospital provides when such an incident occurs. It told me what number COVID death she was in Monroe County at the time. I can’t recall what the exact number was, but it was high, as Monroe County is much bigger than Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties combined.”

Gerald “Bucky” Bradley
Athlete
1965

Like many other children in the village of Peru, New York. Bucky’s athletics began and ended with Coach Papero. He started playing little league baseball and competed in many Clinton County Youth Commission events. Swimming was one of my better sports and led me to become a lifeguard at Plattsburgh Beach and saving two people’s lives from drowning.

While at Peru High School in 1961-1965, he received 15 Varsity letters in football, wrestling, track, tennis and baseball. There were many wonderful highlights in those years and several league Championships. Scoring 5 touchdowns in one game is a special memory, which he was able to accomplish with great teammate support. Making radio and newspaper All-Star teams was very rewarding and Bucky said “it was not possible without the support of his teammates”. In the 1963-64 school year, his teams won every major sport Championship.

In 1964-1965 Bucky was a member of the wrestling team that started the undefeated team dual meet state record of 122 matches. In 1965 Bucky was a sectional and intersectional champion and finished high school with a 30 and 1 record.

 In 1964, the 880-track relay team set the school record at that time with a 1:35 time.

Bucky wanted to show his gratitude to the great coaches that helped him; Coach Papero, Coach Beauvais, Coach Bombard and the many assistant coaches that coached and mentored him during his athletic career.

Leon Brousseau
Athlete
1969

Leon Brousseau graduated from Peru High School in 1969. Although he participated in more than one sport, he became a well-known athlete in the wrestling community and had many achievements during his high school and college careers.

Leon showed his Indian pride and leadership skills by being a starting offensive guard in football for 3 years; captain his junior and senior years.
He began his outstanding wrestling career as a freshman and soon outshined his opponents. Leon was and still is considered a Peru Matman for Peru then and now! Within those years, he was co-captain his junior and senior years, became a two-time sectional champion in 1969, with a record of 15-0. His team, coached by the late Stanley Riggs, had 81 consecutive wins and 5 consecutive sectional championships.

He was the first athlete at Peru High School to receive a full scholarship to Paul Smith’s College where he continued his wrestling career. He placed 4th in the state championships and was awarded Athlete of the Year. Leon graduated in 1972 with a Business degree.

Beginning in 1998, Leon served on the Peru Central School Board of Education for six years. He has volunteered for the Dannemora Federal Credit Union since 1995 and currently serves as Chairperson on the Board of Directors. After 35 years of dedicated service as an Officer, he retired from the NYS Department of Corrections.

Assemblyman Jones calls for reforms to CDL process, new driver recruitment initiatives

Assemblyman Billy Jones (D-Chateaugay Lake) held a press conference on Friday, Oct. 29, to highlight the commercial driver license (CDL) workforce shortage and discuss how it has impacted North Country businesses. Jones is pushing for the state government to develop solutions to help potential drivers obtain their CDL and showcasing local programs that help drivers obtain their CDL.

“Small businesses are bearing the brunt of the global supply chain shortages, increasing transit costs and delaying supply deliveries,” Jones said. “Part of this disruption is due to a need for more CDL drivers, but anyone interested in obtaining this license faces a cumbersome system that can deter new drivers from entering the trucking industry.

Jones is looking into developing unique solutions, such as how a high school in California recently started offering a truck-driving program for students.[1] Similar programs exist right here in the North Country at Champlain Valley Educational Services (CVES), and those programs need to be highlighted, advanced and promoted. CVES has both CDL-A and CDL-B Training Courses for adults that work with local businesses such as Upstone Materials and Casella Waste to train and hire new drivers. Many local schools even help pay for the training required to be a school bus driver. CVES is looking for other local businesses to also become involved with their programs.

“The state needs to do more to not only promote these programs but also to support them. I am proud to have secured funding to help pay for a tractor trailer for this program, which ironically is late being delivered due to supply chain issues,” Jones said.

Jones has also received several complaints about the process required to obtain a CDL including the pre-inspection test. Obtaining a CDL allows a driver to operate trucks with double or triple trailers, hazardous materials and a tank, along with passenger vehicles “We must streamline the CDL process and develop better initiatives to recruit the next generation of drivers. Addressing these issues is a win-win for local businesses, consumers and local governments,” Jones said.

Truckers are the backbone of our nation’s economy, but the industry faces a shortage of around 80,000 drivers, according to the American Trucking Association.[2] The average age of a trucker is roughly 55 years old, so recruiting young drivers is important, Jones noted.

Peru Gazette 2019 photo

Join the Peru Lions club on Wednesday, November 24th for the 44th running of an amazing Adirondack Coast tradition, the John P. Adams Memorial Turkey Trot. Proceeds benefit the charitable work of the Peru Lions Club. Click here to register.

This year’s race takes place in-person and also virtual (wherever you are and wherever you’d like to run)!
In-Person – The in-person race returns to Peru Central School! The 5k and the 10k** start at 9am and will feature a chip-timed, staggered start (you can start the race anytime between 9am and 9:10am). Bib pickup will be on race morning and all activities will be outside, with some weather protection provided by the bays of the Peru Central School bus garage.
Awards will be given to the top three men and top three women in the in-person 5k and the 10k.
Route Adjustments: We’ve made a few route adjustments to ensure a proper distance and to make our socially-distant race more runner friendly. Please review the maps
**ATTENTION: We’ve updated the 10k route to make it a true 10k. We added a short out-and-back on Twin Creek Drive (off of Barney Downs Road).
All runners will receive the commemorative 2021 Turkey Trot Hero Spoon: Elegant yet sophisticated, the Turkey Trot Hero Spoon is a compliment to any Thanksgiving Day meal. Be the talk of the table when you stroll in with your own utensil, forged from the fires of running traditions and food comas. Fend off Uncle Harold for that last biscuit or shovel those mashed potatoes with swift and glorious conviction.
Virtual Race – The window for running the Peru Turkey Trot begins on Wednesday November 24 at 6am and ends on Thanksgiving Day (11/26) at noon. You can run anytime during this period, but we encourage you to keep the tradition going and run on Thanksgiving morning. On race morning, you’ll get a text or email (make your choice during registration–we recommend text, which makes results submission SO easy!). It will include instructions on how to text or email results when you are finished. Run or walk your 5k or 10k during that time with friends and family (make sure they register!). Your results will be uploaded to the race website and will appear with the other virtual Peru Turkey Trot runners who ran with you!
Spoon pick-up times are on Thanksgiving morning from 8am-11am at the Peru Central School. Or, you can opt to have it mailed to you for an extra $5 (You must register before 11/19 for it to arrive before Thanksgiving!).
The Peru Lions Club consists of people who represent a cross section of our community. Chartered in 1945, the Peru Lions Club continues to serve the community in a variety of ways. We live by our motto “WE SERVE” and where there is a need,you will see a Lion. A prime example are the free eye screenings we provide to incoming kindergartners, day cares, any child between the ages of 1 and 5, across upstate NY. While our main goal is to aid the visually impaired and blind, our club contributes to over 18 service projects. 100% of YOUR donation at our Turkey Trot and other fundraisers goes back to your local community. Thank you as always for your support.

Drivers Urged to Be Alert for Moose in the Adirondacks

Moose standing in tall brush

If you’re traveling to an outdoor destination this weekend be on the lookout for moose on the move. This time of year, moose are wandering looking for mates, leading them to areas where they are not typically seen. While this improves the opportunities for people to enjoy sightings of a moose, it also increases the danger of colliding with one on the roadway.

Moose are most active at dawn and dusk, which are times of poor visibility. They are also especially difficult to see at night because of their dark brown to black coloring and their height – which puts their head and much of their body above vehicle headlights.

Take the following precautions to prevent moose-vehicle collisions:

  • Use caution when driving at dawn or dusk – reduce your speed, stay alert, and watch the roadsides;
  • Slow down when approaching moose standing near the roadside, as they may bolt at the last minute when a car comes closer;
  • Moose may travel in pairs or small groups, so if a moose is spotted crossing the road, be alert for others that may follow;
  • If a moose does run in front of your vehicle, brake firmly but do not swerve. Swerving can cause a vehicle-vehicle collision or cause the vehicle to hit a fixed object such as a tree or pole; and
  • If a moose is hit and killed by a vehicle, the motorist should not remove the animal unless a permit is obtained from the investigating officer at the scene of the crash.

If you do see a moose, be sure to report it and submit a photo to Info.R5@dec.ny.gov. More information about moose can be found on DEC’s website.
