On February 15th, the traditional start of winter break, many local residents will be departing for vacations, but another group of residents will be departing for Chiquilistagua, Nicaragua (about 10 miles from Managua) where they will be working as North Country Mission of Hope volunteers. Award winning singer and veteran Broadway performer Karen Mason returns to the North Country for one show only on Friday, February 6th. The performance will be held at the Plattsburgh Elks Club and will begin at 8:00pm. Tickets for the performance are $25 each and are available at the Peru Community Church Office (13 Elm Street) or by calling 643-8641. The agenda for the Peru Town Board’s January 26th meeting is one of the briefest in recent memory. Supervisor Donald Covel will discuss and/or vote on the following matters: retirement procedures for elected and appointed salary positions as directed by the NYS Retirement Department; contracts that were not approved at the Board’s January 12th organziational meeting; a previous board policy that meeting agenda items be presented by Wednesday of the previous week; and town insurance.

Joanne Kennedy and Lori Clark are continuing their pursuit of the “Winter 46” often accompanied by their friend Colleen Kaulfuss. On Monday, January 19, 2009, the ladies completed a thirteen hour hike up Cliff and Redfield Mountains. A stomach bug kept fellow hiker Jean Ryan from accompanying them, but she’ll undoubtedly be back for their next adventure. Joanne Kennedy wrote an interesting account of Monday’s very difficult trek. The Peru Town Board conducted its annual organizational meeting on Monday, January 12, 2009 preceding its regular meeting. Annual contracts were renewed and committee chairs appointed for 2009. There were no significant changes from 2008.

Three Peru ladies Joanne Kennedy, Lori Clark and Jean Ryan are attempting to climb the “Winter 46” which means they must climb all the Adirondack peaks over 4,000 feet in height during the winter season. They’ve already climbed 35 plus peaks. Last Saturday, January 10, 2009, accompanied by their friend Colleen Kaulfuss, the ladies climbed Donaldson, Emmons and Seward Mountains starting their climb between Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake. This past Christmas a blown circuit breaker at St. Augustine’s Church resulted in the Christmas Eve and Christmas Masses being celebrated without the benefit of electric power. A few candles were the only lights that illuminated the Church. Zachary, Ryon, Riley, Brady and Nicki O'Connell

On February 5th Nicki and Ryon O’Connell will help their son Brady celebrate his second birthday and it would be understandable if they reflect on their experiences over the past two years. On November 15th Brady returned home after having undergone three kidney transplant surgeries over a ten-week period. The legal case against Town Supervisor Donald Covel has been “adjourned without date” according to a Clinton County Court spokesperson. A scheduled January 6th conference between the Court, The District Attorney and Covel’s Attorney Mark Cowen was cancelled. The case is, however, is still considered to be active. Read more »
