Clinton County August 21st COVID-19 Update: Lab-confirmed positive +1, Recovered +0, Deaths +1, Tested +170

Plattsburgh, August 21, 2020. The Clinton County Health Department (CCHD) is reporting the death of a Clinton County resident due to COVID-19. This case is linked to the recent Essex Center outbreak and was reported by the Essex County Health Department on the evening of Thursday, August 20, 2020. This is the fifth death due to COVID-19 in Clinton County. As of 8:00 am Friday, August 21, 2020, the Department reports 4 active cases of COVID-19, and a total of 263 cases of COVID-19 since early March 2020 (145 lab-confirmed positive and 118 probable).

“We would like to express our heartfelt condolences to this individual’s family and friends, as well as to our neighbors in Essex County who are also grieving the loss of their loved ones,” stated John Kanoza, Director of the Clinton County Health Department. “Contact tracing, isolation and quarantine remain essential in mitigating the spread of COVID-19. Our Department has been heavily involved in these activities since the start of the pandemic, but we urge residents to do their part by continuing to act responsibly. Avoid large gatherings, wear a face covering, maintain a physical distance of 6 feet from others, and wash your hands frequently. As this instance has reminded us, older adults are at increased risk from COVID-19, and we urge our residents to take every possible precaution to protect our fellow community members who are more susceptible to the virus,” noted Mr. Kanoza.

Note: Our next case update will be shared on Monday, August 24, 2020.

Women’s Equality Day Forum

Wednesday, August 26, 2020, from 4:00–5:00 pm via Zoom

RSVP: dmwardell76@gmail.com for emailed Zoom link to join by computer or phone

Co-hosted by the Clinton County Historical Association and the League of Women Voters of the North Country

The public is invited to join the League of Women Voters of the North Country and Clinton County Historical Association members to mark the Centennial Anniversary of the adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution which prohibits the states and the federal government from denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States on the basis of sex.

Local League member Penelope Clute will offer introductory remarks on the historical significance of the day. Michelle Cromwell, PhD., SUNY Vice President for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion/Chief Diversity Officer will offer a keynote address, “The Crossroads: Where Democracy, Social Justice and Civil Rights Meet.”

The talk will examine the intersection of social justice, democracy and civil rights by exploring the ways that the LWV looks at and works on their issues from an equity-minded lens. “Being equity-minded requires going beyond speaking about equity which is the end goal, and to understanding and combatting the ways that inequity shows up at multiple levels” Cromwell said. The talk will also explore the ways that some voters’ issues are less apparent especially among rural, underrepresented minorities, and the poor, and the ways that this level of obscurity impacts their civil rights.

To receive the Zoom link to the Forum, RSVP to Diana Wardell at dmwardell76@gmail.com.

Governor Andrew Cuomo’s August 20th COVID-19 message

As we prepare for the upcoming 2020 election, it is critical we protect the most fundamental cornerstone of our democracy—the right to vote. Today, I signed legislation that ensures every registered New Yorker has options on how to vote in November in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The legislation signed into law today also takes steps to ensure that every vote is counted.
Starting today, all registered voters can request an absentee ballot if they are concerned about COVID. All Boards of Elections in New York State must count:
  • All ballots postmarked on or before Election Day (November 3rd) and received within seven days after Election Day.
  • All ballots without a postmark received on November 4th (the day after Election Day).

These measures are critical to a full and fair election at one of the most important moments in our nation’s history. We are removing barriers to democracy and will make it easier for all New Yorkers to exercise their right to vote this November.

You can vote early in-person, you can vote on Election Day or you can vote using an absentee ballot. Whatever you do, don’t miss your chance to make your voice heard.

Here’s what else you need to know tonight:
1. The total number of COVID hospitalizations is at a record low. Yesterday, there were 518 total hospitalizations. Of the 80,984 tests reported yesterday, 601, or 0.74 percent, were positive. For the 13th consecutive day, our daily positive infection rate has been below 1 percent. Sadly, we lost 5 New Yorkers to the virus.
2. A recent study highlights New York as one of the only states that exceed the testing level considered necessary to mitigate the spread of the virus. One of our top priorities in combatting Coronavirus is maintaining our testing capacity and New York continues to lead the nation in daily testing.
3. The moratorium on commercial evictions is extended until September 20th. Today, I signed an Executive Order that builds on existing protections for commercial tenants and small businesses. This helps ensure that business owners across New York will not be forced to close as a result of the pandemic.
4. Take advantage of the beauty of New York’s canals and hiking trails this summer. Through Labor Day, the NYS Canal Corporation is promoting six hubs of canals and trail activity and celebrating local canal-side businesses across Upstate NY. The program offers free “Staycation” excursions by kayak and/or bike in Schenectady, Chittenango, Seneca Falls and Rochester.
Tonight’s “Deep Breath Moment”: At Brandywine Living in Princeton, NJ, two residents have found a way to brighten the spirits of their neighbors. In a time when outside entertainment is hard to come by, Ed Beckerman, 92, and Paul Gall, 69 (with the help of their guitar tutor), have been hosting the “Hot Rock Cafe,” a socially distanced occasion to bring live music to the assisted living facility.

One of the North Country’s favorite jazz ensembles – the Wickmoore Jazz Trio at the Harborside

A special treat is in store this weekend: an album release party taking place at the Harborside, featuring one of the North Country’s favorite jazz ensembles: the Wickmoore Jazz Trio!
Brothers Nelson Moore (drums, vocals) and Eli Moore (bass) were born and raised in Saranac before going on to complete degrees in musical studies at SUNY Plattsburgh.
The third member of the trio, pianist Vihan Wickramasinghe, was born in Sri Lanka — but did not discover his passion for jazz until he was in Plattsburgh, studying at Clinton Community College. How these three artists met one another, and how their trio evolved into one of the region’s most highly respected jazz combos, is a fascinating locally based story that underscores the unifying power of music.
Lounge Lizards, their brand-new album entirely of original works composed by these three musicians during COVID-19, will receive its premiere at this upcoming Saturday’s concert, played in its entirety for the first time. Adding to the program will be the smooth jazz, funk, and blues classics for which the Wickmoore artists have become highly acclaimed throughout the North Country and beyond.
High-resolution photos are below, as is the press release for this concert. If you would like to interview the three musicians, I can put you in touch with them. If you would like audio samples of their work, that can be arranged as well.
Thank you greatly for your continued support of live music in our region! I look forward to hearing from you.

Governor Andrew Cuomo’s August 19th COVID-19 message

We continue to make good progress against Coronavirus—for the 12th consecutive day, our statewide infection rate has been below 1 percent. But COVID is not over. Complacency or letting our guard down is a threat to that hard-won progress. We need to keep taking steps to protect one another to keep the numbers low. It’s up to each and every New Yorker.
Chart of the Day: Total hospitalizations are flat.
Here’s what else you need to know tonight:
1. The total number of COVID hospitalizations remains low. Yesterday, there were 548 total hospitalizations. Of the 80,425 tests reported yesterday, 631, or 0.78%, were positive. Sadly, we lost 6 New Yorkers to the virus.
2. I urge New Yorkers to get a flu shot. While we still handle COVID, flu season looms on the horizon. Today, the State Department of Health will issue letters to local health departments requiring them to submit plans as to how they will handle testing for flu and COVID. This year it is especially important that New Yorkers get their flu shot. Find a flu vaccine site near you.
3. The Brooklyn Museum and El Museo del Barrio will reopen to the public on September 12th. Last week, I announced that New York City museums and cultural institutions can reopen starting Monday, August 24th at 25 percent capacity with safety protocols in place.
4. The moratorium for residential and commercial evictions in New York City has been extended to October 1st. Evictions will remain paused for New Yorkers and small businesses facing financial hardship due to the pandemic.
Tonight’s “Deep Breath Moment”: In May, two teenagers in Pearland, Texas dressed up in Spider-Man costumes and held drive-by “birthday parades” for children in their neighborhood. The teens expanded the idea into a fundraiser called “Drive By Heroes,” where they would make heroic appearances in exchange for food donations to their local community center.
